A student-led contact with astronauts through the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program was a great success that earned significant media attention. On Monday, December 11, students at Harbor Creek High School in Harborcreek, Pennsylvania, used amateur radio to talk with Astronaut Andreas Mogensen, KG5GCZ.

The students are part of the Advanced Technologies Group, KC3SGV, an after-school club at Harbor Creek. Fifteen of the students are licensed radio amateurs. As ARRL News reported last week, their faculty advisor, Assistant Principal Drew Mortensen, AC3DS, is a graduate of the ARRL Teachers Institute on Wireless Technology. He utilized what he learned in the program and brought it back to the school. The ARISS contact is just one of the many successes the program has had.

SEKARC VE TESTING !!!

SEKARC will hold it's FIRST VE Testing session on September 5th at 4:30 in the Training Room at Fire Station #1 in Pittsburg. This is a another HUGE accomplishment for the club as we grow and improve our community offerings.

We have one test scheduled so if you would like to inquire about taking your test to upgrade or your first tech license, please send us an email at sekarc.net@gmail.com.

Our plan is to offer testing after each of our meetings in September, October and November so stay tuned and if you are interested in participating please see this site ARRL VE TESTER INFORMATION. It is easy to get signed up wit ha simple review and questionnaire that is sent in.

ARRL International Grid Chase 2018

Get ready to kick off 2018 with a new year-long operating event!

You may not know this, but your station is in a Maidenhead grid square. The entire world is divided into thousands of these 1° latitude × 2° longitude squares, each one with a unique designation. They're all part of a geographic location system adopted in the 1980s at a meeting of the VHF Working Group in Maidenhead, England.

Unless you are a VHF enthusiast, this nugget of information may not mean much. But at 0000 UTC on January 1, 2018, the global Amateur Radio community will be very interested in grid squares.

Get in the Chase

The objective of the ARRL International Grid Chase is simple: Work stations in as many grid squares as possible and upload your log data to ARRL's Logbook of The World. If you are not currently registered with Logbook of The World, this is a good reason to get started. Go to https://lotw.arrl.org/lotw-help/getting-started/. Registration and uploading are free.

Every new grid square contact confirmed through Logbook of The World counts toward your monthly total, so you have an incentive to start the chase as soon as you ring in the New Year.

Just turn on your radio and start calling "CQ Grid Chase," or listen for others doing the same. Make the contact, enter it into your log, and you're on to the next (see the sidebar, "Tips for the Chase").

At the end of each month, your totals on the Grid Chase leader board will reset to zero. Fear not, though. The online scoring system will maintain your monthly totals for a grand total at the end of the year, when an annual summary will be released and awards given to top finishers in various categories.

The ARRL International Grid Chase is open to all amateurs, regardless of location or license class. Any operating mode is eligible as well as every band, except 60 meters. You'll find the complete rules at www.arrl.org/aigc2018.

K2BSA Will Be On the Air During National Scout Jamboree

K2BSA Will Be On the Air During National Scout Jamboree:
The Boy Scouts of America station K2BSA will be on the air during the 2017 National Scout Jamboree, July 18 to July 28, from the Summit Bechtel Scout Reserve in West Virginia. The K2BSA operation will demonstrate Amateur Radio to several thousand Scouts and fulfill the Radio merit badge requirement for QSOs.

"We need you on the other end of the contact," the BSA announcement said.

Some of the members have been making some meteor scatter contacts and I thought this podcast might be interesting to the club! Between five and 300 metric tons of space debris plunges into our atmosphere every day. And believe it or not, hams have been bouncing signals off of it for decades!

ARRL Kansas Section News Summary

Our Section Convention was held at Salina and hosted by Central Kansas ARC at Webster Conference Center. Back to Basics theme continued this year with Johnson County RAC providing a program about their club and what they do. Vice President Arron Boots-AA0RN and Section
Technical Coordinator(and club Member) Bill Brinker-WA0CBW did a wonderful job explaining how JOCO RAC is able to consistently attract club members and newer licensees to their meetings and functions each month. A video of their 2014 Field Day was included as part of their
presentation.

Pony Express Special Event Sunday

The Crown Amateur Radio Association will be operating a Pony Express Special Event Station this Sunday, August 31, 2014. From 9:30 a. m. to 4 p. m. CDT, we will be operating from the grounds of the Historic Hollenberg Pony Express Station 1 mile east of Hanover, KS.

KØASA will operate as an 1860s-style Telegraph Office during the annual Hollenberg Pony Express Station Festival. Frequencies: 7.045, 14.045, 14.245 & 18.085 MHz. We plan to be operating on 40m at 11 am and 2 pm CDT as well as at other unscheduled times. The 14.245 is for SSB contacts!

WWI Museum Field Day 2014

ARRL Affiliation APPROVED!

It's official... Southeast Kansas Amateur Radio Club is now affiliated with ARRL. You can check out our listing HERE. I need to tweak a few of the details but it looks good! Hopefully this will open up some new avenues for growth! Or at least will offer new and interested operators a method to find us!

NPR on the ARRL 100th Anniversary

Even NPR is giving ham radio some press... Speaking about W1AW and the headquarters in Connecticut. I smiled when the reported said... "59 is a fancy way of saying, hear you loud and clear". Well at least they tried right? Listen to the segment below!

The 2014 Armed Forces Day Cross-Band Communication Test will take place on Saturday, May 10. The US Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard co-sponsor the annual Amateur Radio/US military communication test. The 64th Armed Forces Day officially takes place on May 17, but the Armed Forces Day event takes place a week earlier, on May 10, to avoid conflicting with Dayton Hamvention®. The on-the-air celebration features traditional military-to-Amateur Radio cross-band communication on both SSB and CW. Some activity will continue into the early hours of Sunday, May 11 (UTC). Most activity gets underway at 1200 UTC.

April Meeting Sat 4/26

The April meeting of the Southeast Kansas Amateur Radio Club will be this Saturday April 26th at 9 am. Get your coffee and breakfast along with some great amateur radio fellowship and conversation. We hope to have an update on the club call sign and the ARRL affiliation progress at that time.
